Phew, it’s tough keeping a secret for so long! Now that Andy’s released the artwork on his FB, it means it’s close to getting approved, and I get the greenlight to blab about it.

This is what the super-secret project has been about:

I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to get to do the artwork for Flop Poppy’s 5th album, Rasa, which will be out really soon. It’s been awhile since they last came up with an album, having spawned hits like ‘Cinta’ and ‘Aku dan Kamu’ (which is on my staple karaoke setlist). Many months ago, after having to admit to Andy that I karaoke to his songs incessantly (kau senyum mesraaa, mungkin tak mengaapaa…), and also, torrent his songs incessantly, he cut me a CD containing the freshly-mastered new songs — and  we got to work.

Typical of Andy, with his knack for catchy hooks, all the songs in that CD are singles-material. I listened and I drew.

This is the first time I’ve ever done an album cover art, and I hope it will come out okay. Drawing and designing are familiar territories, but it was plenty tricky for me to build a prototype of the CD case so they can show it to the record people and the printing people. I based the construction on a Pearl Jam album case (Pearl Jam Benaroya Hall, October 22nd 2003), which is entirely paper-based, the way I like it. Cutting and gluing things have never been my forte, it took me a whole weekend. Drained out by the gluing process, I only remembered to take photos of the prototype WHILE drinking coffee and waiting for the rockstar to pick the prototype himself. So these are the only pics of the prototype, and if Warner decides to print it differently, or not print it at all, at least you guys saw it here first!
